Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or ESWT, is a non-invasive, non-surgical option for the treatment of heel pain (plantar fasciitis).

The plantar fascia is a strong ligament structure that helps to maintain the structure and arch of the foot. It extends from the base of the toes to the heel bone.

Plantar Fasciitis is caused by overuse or injury. When the plantar fascia is strained due to overuse, improper shoes, or poor foot structure it gets irritated and tender. The resulting irritation causes the symptoms of pain that include any of the following
- Burning sensation on the sole of the foot;
- Recurring foot pain, especially after getting out of bed in the morning; or
- Pain following sitting

Treatment for plantar fasciitis normally requires 3-6 sessions each lasting approximately 10-15 minutes. You will also be informed of some therapies and exercises that you can perform at home to further alleviate your pain and accelerate your recovery. Shockwave Therapy is not normally a first line treatment option but is considered if other conservative treatment options have failed.

There is associated discomfort during the treatment itself, however this ceases immediately following the end of treatment, with no ongoing side effects. The discomfort is no worse than the pain associated with the condition.

Individual results will vary but most people get progressive improvement and function during the weeks of treatment.

Shockwave Therapy is also effective in treating Achilles tendinitis/tendinopathy, non healing fractures and shin pain.

Feel free to contact us and discuss this treatment. Consultations to discuss this treatment can take place at any clinic, however, treatment takes place at Wyndham Private Medical Centre.
